Comedian Jimmy Carr has landed himself in hot water for making light of the Holocaust in his new Netflix stand-up special His Dark Material.
In a widely-shared clip, Carr makes a joke about the Gypsy and Roma people slaughtered by Nazi Germany.
“When people talk about the Holocaust, they talk about the tragedy of 6 million Jewish lives being lost to the Nazi war machine. But they never mention the thousands of Gypsies that were killed by the Nazis,” Carr said. “No one ever wants to talk about that, because no one ever wants to talk about the positives.”
“Nobody leaves my shows thinking
oh, I have learnt something tonight.”
Jimmy Carr on his politically incorrect jokes,
All that said it does not really matter what Jimmy Carr’s Holocaust joke was. One can find such a joke of poor taste and choose not to stream Jimmy Carr’s shows
I find this, I am offended by Jimmy Carr’s joke so you must censor it approach ignorant and dangerous. It is no way different than religious groups worldwide trying to dictate us what we must find immoral and what we mustn’t watch watch.
Jimmy Carr’s audience is not children, and he is not spreading misinformation. As Jimmy Carr often remarks within the lines of “Nobody leaves my shows thinking I have learnt something tonight”.
Any reasonable person who watches his shows understand that Carr is not giving history classes. Furthermore, the audience of Jimmy Carr are aware of the fact that Jimmy Carr is too intelligent and well-educated to be a racist. This is in fact the very reason why they give Jimmy Carr a platform to make politically incorrect jokes.
So, what is it to you what other adults watch and find funny?
Personally, I never liked the said Holocaust joke, which he repeated in various shows in the past, I thought the joke was unnecessary, and the topic of it was about something that took place in too recent history. However, I am ready to defend the right of people who wish to watch shows with any joke they like. Who is it to decide what jokes are abhorrent or permissible?
